Last Night I Missed You

Last night I missed you,
Thoughts of you usurped,
As I laid in bed,
Turning and tossing,
Chasing memories of you,
Seeking to remember you as you were,
The happy, vibrant, boisterous child,
With a laughter that filled a room,
Eyes of rich amber,
And a heart that even death couldn’t stop.

I missed you as you were,
Until the depth of loss,
Took over
Sweet smiles I can no longer see,
Your vibrant laughter has turned to silence,
I missed your eyes of love,
That squinted to a smile
I now must close my eyes to picture it,
I dread the day I last held you,
Replaying your final words,
And how insufficiently I treasured them.

I work out my grief in prose,
But words fail me my sweet child,
The days that drown are fewer,
But when they come,
They transport me to those very moments,
The endless night that robbed me of you,
I feel selfish to return to that place,
When in life, you poured so much,
So many better moments to remember you by.

Forgive mama my darling,
Keep resting in peace,
In eternal bliss,
For my sweet child,
Paradise is the home you deserve.
